Insurance Industry Using Telematics

Today I heard on the CBC news that Insurance companies in Canada are finally starting to adopt the technology already in use in the US for many years…opt-in driver behavior tracking with a GPS device for insurance discounts and safety reasons.

Tracking driver behavior with GPS tracking is a simple and sensible solution to the high cost of vehicle insurance while improving the safety of employees and the general public, while helping the enviroment with more fuel efficient driving.

Today you can take a “plug and play” GPS tracking device…plug it into your vehicle OBD port and away you go.  The device can measure driver behavior using a built in accelerometer. The accelerometer measures G-force so drivers and fleet managers can get email alerts and reports based on rapid acceleration, harsh braking and agressive cornering as well as excessive speeding and idiling…key signs of high risk driving habits.
